Italy: Gruppo Mazzoni experiments with new varieties to meet retailer's need

Mazzoni group has been working in the strawberry sector for over 40 years. "Vivai Mazzoni produces over 100 million strawberry plants per year. We grow a number of varieties to meet the needs of our many clients according to climate conditions and production techniques and the wide range of products really is one of our strong points," says Michelangelo Leis, company manager.

"Another element of our success is variety innovation, which we carry out at the CIV-Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti." Clery strawberries are an example. It is an early cultivar grown mainly in continental Europe and which has been introduced in Canada and in the North-East of the US too a few years ago.

The recent introduction of Kamila, Rania and Nabila meant Vivai Mazzoni could increase its market shares in the Mediterranean. These varieties combine high-quality and great tolerances, so much so that they can be cultivated without using fumigation products that can be dangerous for humans and the environment.

"Mazzoni also sells fresh strawberries from all over Italy, even though in the last two years investments were concentrated in the Verona and Salerno provinces," continues Sergio Trevisan, sales manager.

The most popular varieties in the South are Rania and Camarosa, whereas in the North they tend to prefer Antea and Joly.

"We have been experimenting with new varieties to meet the needs of retailers, who require longer shelf-life and improved taste and aroma." Other varieties with low yields were abandoned because they were no longer profitable.

The season in Salerno started at the end of January, two weeks earlier than usual. Plants look good in general, mainly because of the weather. "We are confident we will have substantial quantities of high-quality strawberries in the next few weeks. We sell 80% of our produce to domestic and foreign retailers between late January and mid-June."

"The campaign of the frozen produce is much longer, as it is available throughout the year. We supply many channels such as industry and H&R both in Italy and abroad with over 20 types of strawberries - IQF with or without stalk, grader, organic, diced, frozen purée, etc."

The new logistics facility in Tresigallo is supplied by a photovoltaic plant and can store up to 6,000 pallets, meaning Mazzoni can supply the main processing industries in Italy in very little time.
