EU: Driscoll’s celebrates first pick of glasshouse strawberries

The berry company celebrates the first pick of glasshouse strawberries of this Benelux season, as a result of an advanced growing method applied to the Driscoll's® Lusa™ variety. This exclusive harvest is seen as a great development in the industry to advance the local glasshouse season. Driscoll’s is expecting the first large volumes of glasshouse strawberries to be available mid-March.

Grower Wilbert van Oers located in Etten-Leur in the Netherlands is responsible for growing and harvesting these first glasshouse strawberries. “Due to the use of assimilation light we can stimulate the growth of the fruit and we are able to harvest strawberries that we only planted eight weeks ago. And as Driscoll’s varieties are high performing, I can still guarantee offering a quality product, even with an early harvest.”

Besides Driscoll's® Lusa™, the company is also developing popular Benelux strawberry varieties such as Driscoll's® Serena™ and Driscoll's® Scarlet™. Through extensive breeding programmes Driscoll’s is continually concentrating on establishing new and successful varieties, as well as seeking new production methods for all four berries which results in delicious, fresh and beautiful berries.
