CultiOne: a modern alternative to reusable trays

In close cooperation with six leading plant growers, substrate manufacturer Cultilène and EPS producer Hordijk have developed a disposable EPS tray. CultiOne holds 252 plugs and has been developed especially for the state-of-the-art sowing and potting facilities commonly found at plant growers in e.g. the Netherlands, Poland and France.

The new single-use tray has clear advantages in terms of hygiene, logistics, plant quality and cost. Thanks to its ingenious design, CultiOne is lightweight but also sufficiently robust. The plant growers asked the designers to pay attention to better drainage and a smooth finish. This ensures better root systems in the 27 mm plugs due to air pruning. For the plant this means less root damage, less wastage and faster growth from the plug into the stone wool block.
Field research indicates a substantial contribution to improved plant homogeneity and development. These findings are important benefits for both the propagator and the end user. Hence, the use of CultiOne ultimately results in better plant quality, providing a firm basis for a successful new crop.

For many years plant growers have been using reusable trays that are transported after use to be sterilized, after which they are sent to the substrate factory to be refilled with stone wool plugs before being returned to the plant grower. These trays are used for five or six years, during which the wastage percentage could amount to around 50% as a result of damage and breakage. The automatic systems used by the cultivation businesses require uniform, undamaged trays in order to prevent disruption. With CultiOne failures due to damaged trays are history. Furthermore, as the tray is used only once, hygiene within the chain is improved. After use the material is easy to recycle as soil improver or as an additional component in concrete.

With CultiOne, Cultilène offers plant growers a complete concept that has been developed in mutual consultation and is a shining example of customer-oriented innovation.
