Agrotomato is the first Swiss grower to use the Agrifast Tom-System

When talking about Switzerland, everybody will think in banks, watches and chocolates, but there are also good vegetable growers. Agrotomato, founded in 2007, is a young company, which owns a state of the art 2.2 hectare greenhouse in Giubiasco, situated in the Canton of Ticino, in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland.

The investment made was more than 4 million Swiss Francs, and the production is hydroponic, using coco peat. They grow several different tomato varieties: cherry, truss tomato, cherry toscanella etc.

“Everybody told us we were crazy trying to grow tomatoes in a place surrounded by mountains over 3,000 meters covered by snow during the whole year” explains Claudio Cattori, manager and owner of the company. “But we believe that using the right technology, it is possible to grow vegetables everywhere, and we have shown it”

Nowadays Agrotomato is one of the best known tomato brands in Switzerland and the demand of their tomato is higher than the production

According to Mr. Cattori, “we always like to invest in technology and new products to improve our production. That is why last year we started a trial with the Agrifast Tom System. The results were excellent, so for this year we are going to use it in the whole greenhouse. This new clipping method reduces a lot the labour cost of clipping, especially considering the high wages we have in Switzerland”. In this way, Agrotomato workers are able to clip more than 1200 plants per hour, so 40% faster than using plastic clips.
