Spain: Madrid registers great increase in organic production

The Spanish Region of Madrid registered a 19% growth of organic agriculture. It currently has more than 260 producers, which in absolute terms makes it Spain's third fastest growing region, only behind Valencia and Catalonia.

The Region strongly supports organic agriculture as a complement to traditional agriculture, as it entails environmental advantages such as the reduction of wastage, restrictions in the use of chemicals or improvements in the soil's fertility and the quality of the produce, which is more nutritious, with a greater content of dry matter, has a longer shelf life and tastes better.

Since 2007, Madrid's regional Government has boosted the organic agricultural sector with a total of 4.9 million Euro in funding.
