Cucumber production in France decreases by 4%

Cucumber production in France with 119,500 tonnes is 4% lower than in 2012. This according to figures of Agreste. This decrease is the result of the bad weather in spring and especially because of the shortage of light. The countries from which France import cucumbers, Spain and The Netherlands, have also suffered because of this.

The area has also decreased this year and this amounts to 550HA (-3%/2012). Only in the regions Centre and Bourgogne there is no decrease in area at all. The production on open ground decreased by 5% (60HA), in glasshouses -3% (350HA) and under plastic -2% (100HA).

At the start of the season prices were higher than in 2012 and the five year average remained high all through the selling season. As a result of the unfavourable spring weather supply and demand were just about in balance during the entire season. March sales were 20% lower than in 2012, but during June and July the level of sales were higher than a year ago. The export volume was the same as in 2012. The turnover figure increased by 9% compared to 2012 and by 14% compared to the average of 2008-2012.
