Algaecom to realize largest algae farm in Europe

Dutch company Algaecom from Eelde plans to set up the largest algae farm in Europe. The nursery of 2.5 to 3 hectares is to be built in the Eemshaven or near an industrial area in Delfzijl. Companies in the region will provide the nursery with CO2 and heat. Algaecom has developed the technology for capturing CO2 and the use thereof in greenhouses. This was done in a small pilot project in Hoogkerk. From the harvested algae, valuable oil and vegetable protein can be extracted for animal feed.

Algaecom is developing sustainable production sites where algae grow based on residuals. The founders of Algaecom are Dr. Monique Schoondorp and Bert Knol. Schoondorp has a background in chemistry and biotechnology, Knol has a background in agriculture, renewable energy and sustainable resources.
