Chinese greenhouse acreage about to hit 1 million hectares

China's greenhouse acreage is about to hit one million hectares. According to statistic provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations the total amount of fresh produce grown both in open field and greenhouses in 2001 was 383.86 million tons. Ten years later, in 2011, the production saw a rise of 48% towards 565.40 million tons.

The Chinese growers are getting more and more familiar with cultivation techniques; In 2001, the Chinese pepper growers produced 1.85 kg/m2 and in 2011 this was 2,2 Kg/m2. The cucumber growers did even better; they went from 2.17 kg/m2 to 4.26 kg/m2 . The average Chinese tomato grower harvested 3.28 kg/m2 in 2001, in 2011 this was 4.93 lg/m2
