Austria: Werner Perlinger is the hardest working man in fresh produce

Werner Perlinger from the Austrian town of Wallern is the largest vegetable trader of Burgenland and one of the most successful in Austria's fresh produce business. He provides 25 types of vegetables to large retail chains and his company has already achieved 50 million Euro in sales in 2013.

To be one step ahead of the competition: that is the purpose of Werner Perlinger. It all started twenty years ago when Perlinger decided to join the small vegetable business from his father. "I my got my drivers‘ license on my eighteenth, bought a VW bus and sold vegetables on the 'Großmarkt Inzersdorf." "Then I started to supply retail chains with small amounts and so it developed," the successful businessman explains.

What began with a van and a single hall has grown into a huge empire with a covered area of 25,000 square meters. In numerous halls, thousands of kilos of vegetables are wrapped daily, after which they’re shipped to all major retail chains. The 54-year-old trader employs over 100 growers.

"In 2005, all producers united in a producer organization. That was a big advantage. As a result we have gained more producers," says Werner Perlinger.
