Dutch growers might favour cucumbers over tomatoes this year

The supply of Dutch cucumbers has been fairly constant in the last few weeks. Sales organisation Kompany reports that it has kept prices at a reasonable level in previous weeks, but it remains to be seen where things are heading. "In recent weeks, there was a strong demand from Germany, England being fairly self-sufficient. With temperatures rising, we expect the demand for Dutch cucumbers to climb accordingly.”

At times, the price levels of Dutch cucumbers differed significantly with the Belgian clock rates this season, but according to the sales director, this is a recurring theme. "To compare properly, you need to look at the overall picture."

Kompany expects that this autumn, more growers will exchange part of their tomato crop for cucumber cultivation. "I reckon about 50 hectares of autumn tomatoes will go to cucumbers. Due to higher energy consumption tomatoes just aren’t profitable enough. Incidentally, due to problems with the fur virus earlier, Kompany growers with a combined acreage of 30 hectares of cucumbers already switched to tomato crop."
