Israel: locusts eradicated without damage to agriculture

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Yair Shamir: "Thanks to the joint effort and hard work around the clock by teams of ministries of agriculture, regional councils and the Negev farmers, we were able to eradicate the locusts while preventing damage to plants and agriculture. During the campaign against locusts, the mechanism for handling crises was updated and improved by the Agriculture magisterium, and as from now on an elaborated system of "crisis management" was created and will provide solutions to any kind of crisis to flora and fauna in future.

The Ministry of Agriculture led the campaign against locusts over the last three months, in full cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, Ramat Negev Regional Council and the Agricultural Negev growers.

After 100 days, the Ministry announced a victory whilst preventing damage to agriculture and plants. In the three months before Passover, crews worked around the clock 7 days a week with one goal - to eradicate locusts in Israel. After three months, the locusts disappeared from Israel without causing damage to agriculture, and without spreading beyond the areas in the western Negev.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported that there are still only a few individual locusts in different places in the Negev scattered sporadically. In addition, there are new swarms in the country and outside the country. It was reported by the Ministry that the remaining individuals are not harmful due to the dispersion in individuals. If there will be further invasions of locusts to Israel, the Ministry of Agriculture knows how to treat them.
