In particular, the company located in Ferrara selects and checks the main new strawberry, fruit plant and rootstock varieties destined both to companies that are part of the Salvi Group and to external markets.
Silvia Salvi (in the photo), partner and representative of the company, says, "the main objective was to produce plants in order to meet the needs of fruit companies of the Salvi Group and of associated producers and bestowers in general. As we were successful, we decided to invest more to extend sales both domestically and abroad."
The procedure is easy but rigorous: on the basis of the requests coming from the market, which are more and more demanding, Salvi Vivai selects new varieties, locates the area where they can grow best and checks their adaptability through productive tests. Everything is done following rigorous regulations regarding traceability in order to guarantee safety and transparency to our clients. For example, Salvi Vivai was among the first in Italy to introduce products labelled "virus-free", endorsing the voluntary health certification of nursery plants.

"We produce around 100 million strawberry plants, 1 million fruit plants and 3 million rootstocks, which we distribute on national and foreign markets. There are many varieties of strawberry plants: refrigerated, fresh bare root, waiting beds, trays and minitrays, plugs and runners in order to meet any need our clients may have."
"20% of the plants are sold in Italy and 80% goes abroad especially to France, Germany and United Kingdom, also to Greece, Holland, Belgium and developing countries in Eastern Europe. In the last few years, we have been pushing for Russia, Ukraine and Chechnya. Another important basin is North Africa."
"The market is evolving quickly, just think about Germany: only a few years ago, it was importing a lot of fruit from Italy whereas now it produces most of it, so much so that it has become our second supplier of strawberry plants," explains Salvi.
Recently, Salvi Vivai has started producing fresh strawberries directly in Poland. They are harvested in October and are sold in Italy and Greece.

"As regards fruit plants, we mainly cultivate apple, pear and cherry trees in addition to top fruit rootstocks. Until 6-7 years ago we mainly sold pear trees, whereas now apple trees predominate as they can be cultivated in many areas."

"As of 2009, we have been also concentrating on cherry trees, thanks to a few projects with the University of Bologna, like for example the ladderless cherry tree, a system thanks to which pruning and harvesting can be carried our without using ladders, thus keeping managing costs down. We have also obtained the new cherry variety licence from the University of Bologna for the Sweet series and for new Hungarian varieties which produce a lot of big, sweet and juicy fruits."

In the Ferrara province, Salvi Vivai has also set up an experimental field in which it observes and evaluates new cherry tree varieties and selections, classic and dwarfing rootstocks and layouts.

"60% of fruit plants are sold in Italy and the remaining 40% is sold abroad. Apple trees are popular in Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Russia as well as in North-Central Italy. Pear trees are almost exclusive to Emilia-Romagna in the Modena, Bologna and Ferrara provinces. Cherry trees are sold in Trentino, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna as well as in Greece," concludes Silvia Salvi.
