Green Farming:

"Kenya: First results on "Water Management in Kenyan Horticulture" available in september"

In the period of July 2011 until July 2014 the Green Farming demonstration project ‘Water Management in Kenyan Horticulture’ is being implemented in Kenya at Van den Berg Roses in Naivasha. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate that through the implementation of proper technology and management, water and nutrient use in protected horticultural production systems can be reduced and production quantity and quality can be increased at the same time.

The aim is to realize this through a closed production system with fully controllable crop inputs and recyclable fertigation water. Since the implementation of the project data has been collected and analysed in close cooperation with the Horticulture Department of Jomo Kenyatta University for Agriculture and Technology. Project partners Bosman, Hoogendoorn Growth Management, Van der Knaap Groep, Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture, Genap, Hatenboer-Water and DLV Plant will present the results of the 1st year during a seminar organized on the demo site during the Naivasha Horticultural Fair period in September.

The presented data will include information on the water and fertilizer use of the rose crop grown in a hydroponic system and in the control environment in the soil. Besides that, production results including the produced number of stems, weights and lengths for the hydroponic system and soil cultivation will be shared. In the end the cost-benefit calculation will result in a complete financial overview of the project set up.
