UK: Grower wages survey highlights above average wage rises
Levels of pay increases in nurseries are on average 2.3%, compared with 1.6% for the garden retail sector and 1.5% for the national average provided by the Office of National Statistics.
With the estimated turnover of HTA grower members being around £470 million, approximately £1 million of staff costs could have been saved by the sector if pay rises given were in line with the national average of 1.5%. This is based on HTA grower members only, and so if applied across the entire ornamental sector this figure would be even higher.
Gary Scroby, HTA Policy Manager comments “The results of this survey expose once again the distortion in pay rates that the AWB has created in the sector, and we applaud the Coalition for abolishing it.”
The report, based on a survey of 50 HTA grower members, prospective members and BOPP members is a key tool which allows businesses to benchmark themselves within the sector. It includes key metrics such as average pay rates for different job roles, staff costs, sales turnover, level of pay increases and redundancies.
Growers that took part in the survey receive a copy of the report free of charge. The report is available for other HTA members to purchase.
