Greenhouse vegetables:

Netherlands: Sustained production levels despite shrinking acreage

The acreage for greenhouse vegetables continues to shrink in 2013. Vegetables like peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers face reductions up to 5%. In contrast, in the variety development the more productive varieties prove popular. ING expects therefore that despite the decrease in acreage, production volumes will remain the same. The number of new building plans is still extremely low. Partly due to low stocks, prices in a fledgling market remain at a decent level. Horticulturalists themselves are more positive than a year ago. More than 50% of them expect a positive return, as opposed to about 30% last year.
