Peppers Unlimited expects this season to be better

Netherlands: Peppers in all colours in spite of dark winter

"We have had some dark weeks in December and January, leading to at least 20% less light than normal. But the crop has responded nicely," says Wilbert van den Bosch of Peppers Unlimited. This week, he harvested the first red peppers. "The green and yellow ones have already been harvested. Now all colours are available again."

At Peppers Unlimited (www.gelepaprika.nl) 7.5 hectares of peppers are grown unexposed, and 6 hectares with lighting. Wilbert van den Bosch supplies FresQ via PaprikaNL. Since 2009 he has been lighting with 7000 lux. "That was pretty exciting at first, but we’re getting more and more grip on the technical aspects. Despite the gloomy weather of recent weeks the crops are doing well," says Van den Bosch as he walks through the greenhouse. "It looks nice and neat. And we didn’t have to resort to spraying just yet, so the product is residue-free."

The coming season looks promising. "The supply from Israel and Spain seems to be low, so we expect fairly good prices for the Dutch produce. And it’s about time, if I may say so!"
