Spain: Normal artichoke volumes despite frost

The artichoke campaign is developing smoothly in Murcia, Spain, unlike in Navarra, where they suffered severe frosts which have spoiled the entire harvest. "Here we have suffered a few frosts in January which caused some losses, but production volumes remain normal," explains Francisco Herrero, Commercial Director of Subasta del Sureste S.L.

Formed by growers, brokers and exporters, Subasta del Sureste was founded in 2004 hoping to become an innovative firm, dealing equally with all horticultural sectors.

Its artichoke specialty is the Tudela White variety, which is the most common and profitable one. The White variety reproduces through cuttings and not seeds, unlike other varieties and plants. "Our production costs lie in the planting of the cuttings and not on seeds, so we rely entirely on ourselves, without needing to adapt to what seed developers dictate," points out F. Herrero and adds: "although it will be hard, we would like to stick to this method for a long time to come."

Subject only to the laws of supply and demand, White artichoke prices stood between 0.40 and 0.90 Euro/kilo at yesterday's auction. "We consider them low prices, but this can change any time, as we really depend on the weather," he explains.

According to F. Herrero, artichokes are among the horticultural products that need fewer agrochemicals, so it remains a completely natural product. That is why "eating artichokes is choosing to eat healthy," he affirms.

In Europe it is a product limited to Mediterranean countries. "It is hard to understand why artichoke consumption is so low, because not only is it very healthy, it is also very easy and quick to prepare. It can be eaten baked, boiled, grilled, steamed, etc. We should promote the product without letting it become too expensive and making it profitable for growers," he concludes.

The firm commercialises its products under the brands: SUBASUR, CONJAMON and MI VIEJO.
