Spain: Vilmorin Iberica continues to innovate tomato varieties

The forty year old company Vilmorin Iberica brings annual variation in its supply of tomatoes, in order to keep its assortment refreshing. This season it once again surprised the market with some new varieties. "We developed a ribbed tomato and a long-life tomato never before seen," says Juan Jose Garcia, who works at Vilmorin Iberica. "It is important to meet the ever-changing consumer demand in taste, appearance, convenience, size, and ecological production."

"The development of a new variety may take between 5 and 15 years due to the complexity of the process and the manual work involved. Bringing a competitive new variety on the market is a big effort, and requires proper marketing. Therefore the competition between seed suppliers is hard, but this is necessary to cultivate a product that meets the demands of consumers."
