In the Netherlands, the first seedlings have been placed on the Weerwater lake as part of the Floating Deltas project, a Living Lab initiative. The project investigates the feasibility of cultivation on water, its implications for crop nutritional value, and consumer attitudes toward this form of food production.
Food Pioneers is a partner in the consortium behind the project. The company previously supported the development of an early prototype of the floating food island through a knowledge voucher, at a time when the initiative operated under the name Floating Future. That company went bankrupt in 2024.
The current phase focuses on testing and evaluation. Researchers are monitoring crop development and comparing the nutritional value of water-grown produce with that of conventionally grown vegetables.
The project addresses a broader challenge: global population growth combined with increasing pressure on available land in water-rich deltas and densely populated urban areas, alongside a growing need for resilient food supply chains. Cultivation on water may offer relevant opportunities in this context. Consortium partner and startup Floating Islands, for example, is exploring applications in the Caribbean, where land scarcity is significant and food security is heavily dependent on imports.
The consortium is currently seeking a party interested in taking over the first harvest once the crops are ready.
