The war in Iran is also taking a toll on Viennese agriculture. According to the Vienna Chamber of Agriculture, production costs have risen by up to a fifth. Producers say this will now be reflected in higher prices at the supermarket. "It's hard to say exactly yet, but I expect we'll be talking about a 15 to 20 percent increase."

Producers now have to pass on the higher production costs, says Josef Peck (pictured above), chairman of the LGV Sonnengemüse growers' association. "Since we mostly sell at current or weekly prices, this will be an increase starting now that will last for an indefinite period. Fortunately, domestic prices aren't rising nearly as sharply as those for imported goods, because transportation expenses are also a factor there."
Tyrol: No threat to regional supply security yet
In Tyrol, too, rising production costs and increasing pressure from foreign competitors with different production standards are making life difficult for farms, as Stefan Müßigang, chairman of the Tiroler Gemüsebauern emphasizes. In addition, the lack of agricultural diesel is affecting profitability. At the same time, supply security remains a key issue. Stefan Müßigang does not currently see any threat, but imports continue to rise.
