Following the transition of Jake Houweling to Source.ag, Amos Bassi has stepped into an expanded hybrid role at Philips Horticulture LED Solutions, combining his responsibilities as Senior Plant Specialist with Key Account Management for the Leamington region.
The transition ensures continuity for growers in one of North America's most concentrated greenhouse production areas, with Amos working closely alongside Ali Mohammad to maintain both technical and commercial support.
"I want growers to know they are taken care of," Amos shares. "This role lets me stay close to the science while also being more directly accountable to the relationships we've built in Leamington."

Focus on data-driven LED optimization
His work continues to center on LED lighting strategies, with a focus on optimizing Daily Light Integral (DLI), refining crop steering, and improving energy-use efficiency. His approach integrates agronomic insight with operational realities, supporting growers in adapting lighting strategies to meet production targets under evolving cost conditions.

A central component of this work is the ongoing tomato trial in collaboration with Grodan in the Netherlands. Now entering its third year, the trial is evaluating low-energy production systems using LED interlighting.
"The data is holding, and it's getting more interesting," Amos notes. "We're seeing that reducing heat input by more than 40% in tomato production is achievable with the right combination of lighting strategy and crop management."
The trial is currently operating at high light intensities, with results indicating stable crop performance under reduced thermal input, an increasingly important factor as energy costs remain volatile.

Industry alignment at ACT Summit
These findings were presented at the Advancing Cultivation Technology (ACT) Leamington Grower Summit, which brought together more than 120 growers and industry stakeholders. The event focused on practical strategies for balancing production targets with energy constraints, particularly through adaptive lighting approaches.
Presenting for the third consecutive year, Amos shared early insights from the latest phase of the tomato research, contributing to discussions centered on applied solutions and real-world performance.
"These events are built for growers. The feedback tells us the format is working. Now we scale it and make sure no one is left out of the conversation."
