An organization that represents Ontario's greenhouse farmers is taking the Town of Kingsville to court over bylaws introduced last year that raised sewer fees for its members in the town. The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) says the town, about 45 kilometres from Windsor, is unfairly targeting its industry.
"Legal action was not OGVG's preferred path, but it became necessary," the organization said in a statement. "Our members operate under extensive regulation and have consistently sought collaborative, balanced solutions with municipalities."
There are 25 greenhouses tied to the Kingsville sewer system. Town officials say greenhouse wastewater is overloading the system and increasing the risk of flooding.
Currently the town is running an oversized rented pump to push more water through its system, but it's not a long-term solution. The money raised by the new fees would pay for upgrades, which are now on hold until the legal action is resolved. The majority of the growers in the town are following the bylaws and paying the fees, the town said.
