The Dutch fertilizer industry association Meststoffen Nederland has issued a statement confirming that there are currently no direct supply problems for the Netherlands, even as unrest in the Middle East continues to affect the global fertilizer market. The association does warn, however, that disruptions in one region can quickly translate into price pressure on raw materials and production costs elsewhere.
In its statement, Meststoffen Nederland notes that European production is running at a solid level, and that exceptionally high import volumes entered the European Union in the fourth quarter of 2025.
According to the association, current developments are placing additional pressure on the cost of nitrogen fertilizers, reinforcing the strategic importance of a strong, competitive domestic production capacity within Europe.
Meststoffen Nederland says it remains committed to ensuring reliable supply to farmers and growers, particularly during periods of uncertainty. The availability of fertilizers is described as essential to safeguarding food security and production continuity in Dutch agriculture.
"We support the efforts of the European Union to prevent further escalation and to promote stability. Should the situation persist or deteriorate further, it is important that EU institutions consider additional support measures for European farmers and for the resilience of the European fertilizer supply chain. Access to fertilizers for agricultural producers goes hand in hand with maintaining a stable and competitive European production and distribution base capable of serving the agricultural sector over the long term," the association stated.
The production and distribution of fertilizers in the Netherlands provides direct employment to approximately 2,000 people and indirect employment to around 6,000.
