Greenhouse horticulture company Vereijken Kwekerijen has installed solar panels across seven locations in Heusden and Aarle-Rixtel in the Netherlands. The installation, carried out by HG Energiesystemen and comprising both standard and greenhouse-roof-integrated panels, is primarily aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the company's electricity consumption during the summer months.
The decision reflects a broader challenge facing the sector: producing equal or better crop results with lower energy input. Roland Gielen, spokesperson for Vereijken Kwekerijen, explains: "We mainly wanted to make our own consumption more sustainable during the sunny period."

Shortly after the installation was completed, the decision proved even more timely than anticipated. Rising energy taxes and CO₂ levies are making energy an increasingly significant cost factor for greenhouse growers. "That makes energy an ever-growing challenge for our business," says Gielen.
The installation is now delivering substantial savings and contributing to a more stable, future-proof operation. Available subsidies have significantly shortened the payback period. "As long as sustainability investments remain possible with an acceptable payback period, we would make the same choice again," Gielen adds.
