Queen Letizia visited the Cajamar Experimental Station "Las Palmerillas" in El Ejido, Almería, yesterday for its 50th anniversary. The center is dedicated to research, innovation, and knowledge transfer to the agri-food sector.
The Queen visited various work areas of the center and was informed of the main research lines being conducted there. The visit began in the laboratory, where the center's managers explained advances in research on biostimulants and bioproducts, including those derived from algae, as well as studies on promoting healthy eating habits.
Afterward, the Queen toured several experimental greenhouses to observe projects related to the development of the Mediterranean intensive agriculture model and the modernization of Almeria's horticultural sector. In greenhouse 22, she viewed tomato cultivation methods that include automation processes, while in greenhouse 21, she observed various vegetables grown under controlled environmental conditions to analyze their effect on crop growth.
The tour also covered greenhouse 8, dedicated to tomatoes, where she learned about innovations in greenhouse design, like fibreglass structures, and ecological management techniques. In greenhouse 2, focused on aubergines, technicians explained how sanding functions as a production method, the use of digital traps for biological pest and disease control, and the digitization of agronomic data.
The day ended with a meeting involving representatives from the Almería Tierra Abierta Foundation's projects, an initiative focused on addressing migration and related issues comprehensively. The Queen had the chance to speak with some of the program beneficiaries.
