Demand for coco coir substrates continues to increase globally as growers look for more sustainable alternatives to peat-based growing media. According to industry sources, supply conditions are also tightening due to weather-related disruptions affecting both peat harvesting and coconut husk processing in key production regions.
Indian substrate producer Vaighai says the trend is already shaping the market outlook for the coming year. The company reports that peat production in the Baltic region declined significantly in 2025 due to heavy rainfall, while unpredictable monsoons have also affected coco coir production in parts of India and Sri Lanka.
"Global demand for high-quality coco coir substrates is soaring, and 2026 is already shaping up to be a year of tight supply across key markets," the company notes.
To help ensure supply stability, Vaighai operates five coir production facilities in South India with a combined capacity of more than nine million grow bags annually. According to the company, the sites include large processing yards and solar-assisted drying infrastructure designed to maintain production continuity even during monsoon periods.

Coco coir has gained traction in greenhouse and soilless cultivation systems because of its balanced water-holding capacity and aeration properties. The material is also increasingly positioned as a renewable alternative to peat, which forms over thousands of years in wetland ecosystems and is under growing environmental scrutiny in several markets.
For berry growers, substrate structure and particle composition play an important role in root development and moisture management. Coco coir's stable structure and air–water balance have contributed to its wider adoption in blueberry and other soft fruit production systems.
Vaighai will be presenting its coco-based growing media for blueberry cultivation during the Blueberry XXXIX International Seminar taking place in Lima, Peru on March 11–12. The company can be found at booth 07, where it will showcase its substrate solutions for berry growers and controlled-environment agriculture.
