Burgenland:

Late start to harvest for local greenhouse vegetables

Around two weeks later than usual, local vegetable growers in Burgenland have started harvesting cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables in their greenhouses. "It was really extremely dark this year," agree Patrick Haider from Perlinger Gemüse as well as Gerlinde Ulrich from Gurken Ulrich—both from Wallern—and Walter Sattler from Gartenbau Sattler in Tadten. "The quality is good, and the fact that the sun is now shining brightly is also helping. Nevertheless, everything is later this year. That's why I'm opening my farm shop ten days later than last year. But on March 12, we'll be ready. We'll already have cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and green lettuce from local growers," says Gerlinde Ulrich.

The tomatoes from Perlinger, who moved into their greenhouses in September last year, have been yielding since November. "This means we can supply all supermarket chains with local tomatoes all year round," says Haider. In winter, however, artificial lighting is of course necessary – which also costs producers more. In addition to tomatoes, the range already includes green peppers, cucumbers, and radishes. They expect the first green lettuce to arrive next week. Haider: "Things are slowly starting to really take off now. The abundance of sunshine currently is ideal, of course."
