Mesh specialist has an eye for detail: insect mesh is easier to install and better protected against winter weather

The use of insect netting in greenhouses is increasing. At the same time, technical developments continue. Gerdo Wennekers of Dutch Netting Systems, based in De Lier, highlights two recent innovations in the company's accordion insect screen system.

One distinguishing feature of the system is a flatter corner design, incorporated in the company's unique CornerAir® concept (link in Dutch). According to Wennekers, the flatter angle prevents gaps from forming between stacked screen panels when a roof vent fitted with accordion netting is closed.

Lighter, more robust, and easier to install
Recent developments have focused on making the system lighter, more robust and less susceptible to contamination. A key innovation is the new EZ-guide system.

"Many guide systems are made of stainless steel or galvanized components, which adds weight," Wennekers explains. "Because the system is fixed to the vent purlin, this creates pressure at that point. With the EZ-guide, we aim to prevent that."

Dutch Netting Systems developed a custom aluminium tube for this purpose. "We bend the tube to match the radius of the vent and connect it directly to the netting. This adds strength to the aluminium while keeping the system lightweight."

The 'EZ' in the product name stands for 'easy'. According to Wennekers, simplified installation is one of the main improvements. "We reduced the number of components from four to one. The system is now easier to assemble. A locking pin is inserted through the top of the guide, and on the other side only a single bolt needs to be tightened."

The EZ-guide is now standard in the company's accordion insect screens. The first projects have already been installed in the Netherlands and abroad.

Special sealing rubber
A second innovation, developed in cooperation with a grower, is available as an option. "The grower wanted better protection of the netting against weather influences," says Wennekers. "In winter, when the netting is stacked, he wanted to reduce the amount of wind blowing through the screen package."

Together, they developed an external rubber seal, which required an adjustment to the aluminium profile. "The rubber can be inserted into the outer profile. It improves sealing and reduces the risk of contamination of the netting when it is stacked."

The first projects using this option have also been completed. "Growers can choose whether they want the system with this special sealing rubber," Wennekers adds. "All customers who were offered this option decided to include it. For us, that confirms that this innovation, developed in cooperation with one grower, is widely appreciated."
