Switzerland:

Greenhouse area grows, number of greenhouse operations declines

Most vegetables in Switzerland are grown outdoors. However, there are also vegetables that grow better or even exclusively in greenhouses.

Tomatoes, for example, are grown almost exclusively in greenhouses, as are eggplants. Lamb's lettuce, on the other hand, is produced much more outdoors than in greenhouses.

The majority of Swiss tomatoes and cucumbers come from hors-sol greenhouses. In 2024, 188 hectares of hors-sol vegetables were produced. Hors-sol means that the plants do not grow in soil, but in substrate, such as coconut fiber or rock wool. The plants receive their nutrients through the water.
