US (RI): Blizzard threatens growing season

Local farms across Rhode Island are reeling after February's powerful blizzard swept through, threatening the start of planting season and dealing a costly blow to growers already preparing for spring.

At Long Lane Farm in Warren, the storm's heavy snow accumulation caused three of the farm's four greenhouses to sustain significant damage. The roof of one collapsed under the weight of the snow.

Owner Camille Abdel-Nabi described the storm as a major setback just as the farm was gearing up to plant for the season. As snow piled onto the greenhouse roofs, she worked to relieve the pressure, cutting holes in the plastic coverings and pushing snow off in an effort to prevent further collapse. Despite those efforts, the damage was extensive.

"I had to basically take a knife at the end of a stick, cut holes every four feet and push the snow off," said Abdel-Nabi. "It was also caving in on me."
