Despite a decline in the average price, Peruvian strawberry exports achieved a higher value in January 2026 than in the same month of the previous year. Shipments for the month totaled $ 6.5 million, up from $6.4 million in January 2025, primarily due to increased export volumes.
A total of 3,913 tons were shipped, up from 3,392 tons in January of the previous year. However, the average price dropped to $1.67 per kilogram from $1.89 in the same period of 2025, indicating that growth was mainly in quantity rather than in unit value.
The United States remained the leading destination for Peruvian strawberries, accounting for 44% of the total export value. In January 2026, shipments to that market totaled $2.9 million, equivalent to 1,755 tons, at an average price of $1.65 per kilogram. Other significant markets include Canada ($2 million, 1,204 tons) and Guatemala ($534,000, 336 tons, with an average price of $1.59 per kilogram). Japan and South Korea complete the top five destinations, showing increased geographic diversification compared to the previous year.
Frozen strawberries remained the leading export item, accounting for over 98% of the total value, with shipments totaling $6.4 million and an average price of $1.68 per kilogram. Processed, pulp, and fresh forms accounted for a small share, sometimes at higher unit prices, but did not significantly affect the overall results.
Strawberry production and exports typically peak from August to early January. However, this year experienced a slight decline, driven by lower average prices despite increased volumes. This pattern reflects the natural end of the season and seasonal supply adjustments.
The Peruvian product primarily originates from the regions of Lima, La Libertad, and Ancash. Globally, Peru faces competition in a market led by major exporters like Egypt, Mexico, Poland, and Chile, with Mexico acting as the key regional benchmark. This landscape demands a robust, seasonally adjusted performance, as price fluctuations and the export season will keep affecting shipment volumes throughout the year.
