Beekenkamp Plants completes full transition to sustainable plant trays

Starting this month, all ornamental plants of Beekenkamp Plants are produced in the sustainable, reusable BKX-tray. This marks a major step toward greater sustainability and efficiency in the team's production processes.

In 2019, Beekenkamp Plants introduced the BKX-tray, an environmentally friendly hard-plastic tray designed for long-term reuse. Developed in close collaboration with sister company Beekenkamp Packaging, the trays are fully aligned with the needs of growers and with Beekenkamp Plants' internal production systems. After use, the trays are returned, washed, and reused, which significantly reduces the ecological footprint.

The BKX-tray offers several practical benefits. Its long lifespan, easy plant removal, and the stackability of all tray sizes help increase efficiency across the supply chain. The tray is also well suited for automatic potting, an increasingly important feature as automation continues to expand within horticulture. During transport, the BKX-tray has proven especially reliable. Unlike disposable trays, which were prone to damage, the BKX-tray remains sturdy. With an expected lifespan of ten years, it provides a sustainable and cost-efficient solution.

Since the installation of an additional module in the tropical seedling line in October 2025, all tropical plants can now also be produced on BKX-trays. This means the final crop group has successfully transitioned to reusable trays. Last month, the very last disposable trays were removed. From now on, only BKX-trays are used in the greenhouses, a milestone the company is particularly proud of.

By fully adopting the BKX-tray, Beekenkamp Plants reinforces its commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and future-focused production. This development marks another important step toward a more sustainable supply chain within the international horticultural sector.
