In March, Apex Greenhouses in Adelaide will host a nationally recognised chemical use and safety training course. This face-to-face training session is part of the Applied Horticulture Australia (AHR) led Growing Horticulture Through Protected Croppingprogram (AS23001), funded through Hort Innovation's Frontiers.
The ACAH certified course has been specifically tailored to address the unique challenges and operational requirements of the protected cropping industry.
Folco Faber, CEO of Apex Greenhouses, said the initiative reflects the sector's strong commitment to safe, responsible and effective chemical management.
"Maintaining high standards in chemical use is essential for the long-term sustainability and professionalism of our industry," Mr Faber said. "This nationally recognised training ensures growers and staff have the knowledge and confidence to handle, apply and manage chemicals safely and effectively within protected cropping environments."
The course provides comprehensive, practical instruction across all aspects of responsible chemical management. Participants will develop skills in pest identification, understanding chemical modes of action, and interpreting product labels to ensure safe and effective application.
Training also covers formulation types, correct application techniques for weed and pest control, and key considerations specific to greenhouse and protected environments.

"Protected cropping presents its own set of challenges, from enclosed spaces to sensitive crops," Mr Faber said.
"This program equips participants with practical, industry-relevant skills that support workplace safety, environmental responsibility and compliance with regulatory requirements."
In addition, the program addresses the safe transport, storage and disposal of chemicals, along with correct preparation and clean-up procedures. Emphasis is placed on maintaining accurate records and meeting compliance obligations to uphold best practice standards across the sector.
The training will be delivered by Tony Bundock, Project Manager with Protected Cropping Australia.
Tony brings more than 45 years of experience in the protected cropping industry and currently serves as Project Manager for Protected Cropping Australia while continuing to deliver specialised industry-based training.
Mr Faber said hosting the course at Apex Greenhouses highlights the ongoing commitment of the Protected Cropping Project to strengthening workforce capability across the industry.
"By investing in high-quality training, we are supporting growers to improve practices, reduce risk and build a more sustainable future for protected cropping in Australia," he said.
