A new digital platform focused on traceability and the management of reusable packaging could generate savings of between 50% and 70% in packaging costs for companies. This is one of the main conclusions drawn from the pilot trial of Ecophir App, a tool developed by the Jané Morraja Group, which specialises in the manufacture of wooden pallets.
The application makes it possible to identify and track different types of reusable packaging used in logistics processes, facilitating both their reuse by shipment recipients and their correct routing to waste management when appropriate.
During the pilot phase, participating companies registered more than 23,000 packaging units put into circulation through the platform. The balance between outbound shipments and returns was very even and, according to the data collected, 50% of the packaging has already been reused, while the remainder is still in circulation. This level of reuse makes it possible to meet the targets set by European regulations with a 2030 horizon.
The pilot project involved meat processors Noel Alimentaria, Obach 1915 and Mafrica, all based in Catalonia, as well as the company Font Packaging.
Jané Morraja chief executive officer Carme Morraja explained that the application was developed after identifying a "market gap" created by new packaging regulations, which require packers to carry out full life cycle tracking of these materials. As she noted, this level of control is difficult to achieve without dedicated tools. In this regard, she highlighted that the platform allows companies to access the information they are legally required to report, monitor the location of packaging in real time and optimise costs through reuse.
The Jané Morraja Group is a business group dedicated to the management and manufacture of wooden packaging. It operates four production companies in Spain and one in Romania, with five production plants located in Catalonia.
