Global water-based cultivation is developing at a rapid pace. Growers are continuously looking for ways to increase yield per square metre, while maintaining full control over water use, hygiene and crop reliability. Within this context, Meteor Systems continues to further develop its solutions for water-based cultivation. The latest innovation: an HDPE float with 140 planting holes, allowing for up to 280 plants per square metre.
With this new float, Meteor Systems takes the next step in optimizing plant density for high-density cultivation of leafy greens and herbs on water. Until now, the maximum was 96 planting holes per float (192 plants per m²). The new design enables a significant increase in plant density without compromising the float's strength or service life.

Continuous improvement for maximum yield
Bas Dirven, water cultivation specialist at Meteor Systems, explains: "Higher plant density aligns with the growing demand for efficient water culture systems, both in greenhouses and in vertical farming environments. By increasing the number of plants per square metre, growers can boost production and returns within the same footprint, while maintaining precise control over water and nutrient flows. Our floats are suitable for use in ponds, on tables and on ebb & flow floors."
The new float is manufactured from food-safe High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and features Meteor Systems' distinctive X-shaped planting hole. This design ensures optimal airflow and CO₂ movement around the plant plug and root zone, contributing to higher yields, strong root development and stable growing conditions.

Building on years of experience in water culture
Meteor Systems has a long track record in developing systems for water-based cultivation. Over the years, the company has introduced multiple innovations in floats, growing floors and integrated water culture systems. "As we work closely with growers, we continuously further develop our cultivation solutions," Bas Dirven summarizes the approach.
More information at international trade shows
In the coming period, Meteor Systems will present the new HDPE float with 140 planting holes at several international trade shows, including Fruit Logistica, Indoor Ag-Con in Las Vegas, and HortiContact. Visitors will have the opportunity to discuss the application of this innovation within their specific growing situation with Meteor Systems specialists.
Growers and partners interested in learning more about the new float or other water cultivation solutions are invited to contact Meteor Systems for tailored advice.
