Well-founded technical advice for a future-proof greenhouse

Greenhouse upgrades and structural assessments are becoming increasingly important in the Netherlands as growers are adding a second, third, or even fourth screen to their greenhouse. Others are switching crops, moving to gutter-based growing systems, or introducing artificial lighting. At the same time, practical questions arise, such as how to deal with corroding roof gutters and when replacement becomes unavoidable.

In all these situations, sound technical expertise is essential to make well-founded decisions. Martijn van Winden and Theo Herngreen of AgriGuard have specialised in this field, combining years of experience in insurance, greenhouse construction, and commercial greenhouse production. "As a young company, we still have to prove ourselves," they say, "but we already hear that clients value our work and intend to involve us more often in the future."

Maintenance and technical additions
That growing demand is not surprising. The greenhouse industry is constantly evolving, and structures are regularly adapted to remain fit for purpose. Sometimes these are necessary interventions, such as addressing corrosion in roof gutters. Several technical solutions are available, but choosing the right one requires careful assessment.

"The severity, location, and type of corrosion are decisive," explains Theo. "Is it surface rust, or are weld seams also affected? Every project is different and requires a well-substantiated technical evaluation. That is what we provide as an independent party."

In other cases, growers want to technically expand their greenhouse, for example by installing an additional screen. Martijn adds: "Screen suppliers often advise having new structural calculations carried out by the original greenhouse builder. With older greenhouses, that builder may no longer exist, or the original calculations may be unavailable. In that case, the entire situation needs to be reassessed and recalculated. That is exactly where we add value."

For growers, builders, investors, insurers, or brokers
AgriGuard works not only for growers, but also for builders, investors, insurers, and real estate agents. The common thread across all assignments is independent, technically sound advice.

Periods of disruption such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the energy crisis, and ongoing innovation in greenhouse construction have led to an increase in modification projects. "Initially, this mainly involved newer greenhouses where additional screens were installed," says Theo. "Now, more complex and older greenhouses are coming into focus."

Martijn notes that greenhouses are now often used for 30 years or more, even though many were originally designed for an economic lifespan of around 15 years. "The demands placed on a greenhouse today are completely different from those at the time of construction."

Sector consolidation has also led to mergers and the acquisition of existing greenhouses. "This creates a need comparable to a structural inspection when buying a house," Theo explains. "There is also growing demand for complete and reliable structural calculations."

With this information, greenhouse operators gain clarity on what is technically feasible and which modifications are required to realise future plans.

From contract review to construction site
AgriGuard is also involved in new-build projects. "We help translate technical contract language into the client's actual requirements," says Martijn. "Does the contract really reflect what the client expects? This includes details such as sealing structural gaps to prevent energy loss. Clear agreements between greenhouse builder and client are essential."

Founded in 2025, AgriGuard currently focuses on the Netherlands but is already receiving enquiries from abroad. "We are exploring what we can offer international clients as well. Our growth will certainly not be limited to the domestic market." As a result, the AgriGuard name may soon appear more frequently on construction sites.

"Independent advice pays off"
Greenhouse projects often involve substantial investments, and Van Winden and Herngreen see a clear willingness among companies to invest in independent technical advice. "When purchasing a greenhouse worth, for example, one million euros, we can identify deferred maintenance in advance," says Theo. "In some cases, those costs can still be recovered from the seller, preventing unpleasant surprises later."

Even when no defects are found, an independent technical assessment has value. "Confirmation that everything is in order provides peace of mind," Martijn explains. "This is especially important after storm or snow damage, when repairs are carried out under time pressure. High workloads, limited availability of materials, and the urgency of repairs make a follow-up inspection essential to prevent subsequent damage."

Stronger together
In the coming period, Martijn and Theo divide their time between greenhouses, construction sites, and the office. "Ideally, the client would like our report yesterday," Theo says with a smile. "That's horticulture for you."

After a site visit, their findings are compiled into a clear report with technical recommendations. Through this approach, AgriGuard aims to contribute to the continued strength of the Dutch greenhouse construction sector. "We want to present the full picture and encourage substantive discussion," they conclude. "That ultimately makes everyone stronger."
