Van der Knaap introduces Green Soil, a circular raw material for RHP substrates

The global demand for raw materials for substrate production is increasing and there is a stronger focus on circular raw materials and peat-free substrates. Van der Knaap Group has been performing research in this field for many years, including in a programme of extremely extensive trials at its own 'de Kas' innovation centre. In collaboration with Comgoed Substrates this research has resulted in a new, circular raw material: Green Soil.

Van der Knaap Green Soil
Green Soil is a circular raw material that can be used in substrate mixtures for professional (ornamental) horticulture. It was developed in collaboration with Comgoed Substrates, a specialist in upgrading residual flows. Van der Knaap Group has been researching this substrate for more than two years, closely monitored by RHP. The substrate has now received final approval for applications in horticulture. This raw material has recently been granted an exemption by RHP and may be used in RHP-certified substrates in professional horticulture.

Quality
The basic raw material from soft fruit is collected through a return system operated by Van der Knaap Group. Van der Knaap does this in collaboration with Comgoed Substrates. They closely monitor the quality of the raw materials and the substrate. For example, Comgoed Substrates checks the quality of the residual flows.

Residual flows that do not meet the requirements are not processed into the substrate. Processing, such as hygienisation, is carried out according to strict protocols. The substrate is also inspected when it leaves the location, on arrival at Van der Knaap and once more during a final quality inspection before the product is delivered to customers.

Benefits
Van der Knaap's Green Soil is a circular, peat-free raw material that contributes to increased sustainability. It offers comparable properties to frozen black peat and contains virtually no ballast or mineral salts, such as sodium and chloride. The substrate has good water and air holding capacities and a bulk density comparable to garden peat. Van der Knaap already incorporate up to 20% without any problems and are conducting tests in their own innovation centre with, for example, 30%.

In addition, Green Soil is an affordable option thanks to its return system, which offers a financial advantage for both the grower who returns it and the cultivator who uses it in their substrate mixture. There is also a positive sustainability aspect due to the lower footprint, as this is a reused raw material.

During IPM Essen, the world's leading trade fair for horticulture, Van der Knaap's sales team is ready to tell attendees more about its products, including its circular raw material Green Soil. Find them at stand D18, hall 3.
