RHP and Klasmann-Deilmann have announced that the demanding RHP horticultural certification has been awarded to sphagnum for the first time. This innovative substrate component, Sphaxx, is cultivated as a renewable growing medium under protected conditions. RHP officially presented the coveted certificate to Klasmann-Deilmann during the IPM in Essen.

RHP quality mark for sphagnum from protected cultivation
RHP first had to work out the requirements for sphagnum and have them approved by the Technical Committee before the necessary tests and checks could be carried out on the sphagnum product. The results confirmed that Klasmann-Deilmann's sphagnum from protected cultivation meets the requirements of the RHP quality mark product certification system.
RHP-certified sphagnum from protected cultivation meets strict criteria across the entire production process and product quality. These include specific chemical, physical, and phytosanitary properties. The controlled production process ensures a safe product with consistent and uniform quality.

A quality mark for maximum safety in horticulture
At the IPM, RHP Operational Director Marco Zevenhoven presented the certificate to Dr Bernd Dreyer, Product Manager for Sphaxx. "We are proud of the RHP quality mark for our sphagnum," said Bernd Dreyer. "Sphaxx comes from protected cultivation under glass, ensuring reliable availability and purity, which is of utmost importance for all growing media. Our sphagnum combines the best properties of peat with the advantage of being a renewable raw material. This makes Sphaxx particularly interesting for horticultural applications where quality is a top priority."

Marco Zevenhoven added: "The variety of raw materials for substrate production is increasing. RHP advocates that growing media and raw materials meet the highest quality standards. This is the only way to ensure that international horticulture can continue to rely on highly functional and safe substrates with strong cultivation results in the future. We are delighted that sphagnum from protected cultivation is now another RHP-certified raw material."
Moritz Böcking, Managing Director of the Klasmann-Deilmann Group, explained: "Klasmann-Deilmann is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Thanks to the rapidly increasing use of renewable raw materials, our substrates are becoming increasingly sustainable while retaining their horticultural quality. Sphaxx is the best example of this. This would not be possible without strong partners. We are therefore grateful to RHP for actively supporting this process of change and measuring our innovations against its high standards. For our customers in horticulture, this is a guarantee of maximum safety."
