AI takes the lead in fruit packing: real-time control for delicate produce

Automation in fruit and vegetable packing is moving toward smarter systems capable of adapting in real time to the natural variability of the product. In this context, Spanish company Azcaval has introduced Azcaval AI System, an artificial intelligence and deep learning solution that is already transforming weight control and operational efficiency on delicate fruit packing lines.

According to the company, "the system does not simply follow a fixed recipe; it continuously learns and self-corrects during production, maintaining high levels of precision without sacrificing speed."

Adaptive real-time control: cycle after cycle precision
"Azcaval AI System achieves this through adaptive control in real time: every cycle, it collects data from all weighing heads and analyzes it instantly," the company explains. "The software identifies behavioral patterns in both the product and the machine, and automatically adjusts operational parameters before deviations can repeat."

In practice, the system regulates critical variables such as vibration and feed flow, maintaining accuracy within a margin of just ±3 grams. This minimizes overweight and allows the line to run at maximum speed with high stability and precision.

Clear advantages for delicate and variable fruit
The system's advantage becomes especially apparent with products like blueberries, cherry tomatoes, and cherries, where slight variations in size, firmness, or moisture can directly affect product flow and overall line efficiency.

"The key benefit is that it keeps both precision and speed stable, even when the product changes," the company notes. "These variations, typical in such fruit, often lead to microstops, manual adjustments, and performance losses that directly impact OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)."

Thanks to continuous real-time learning, Azcaval AI System automatically adapts working parameters to maintain the optimal balance between accuracy and speed. The result is a more stable process, fewer deviations, and higher OEE, without compromising product quality across the production shift.

Measurable results: less overweight and more consistency
The benefits are tangible. "After implementation, clients report clear, quantifiable improvements: reduced giveaway, greater stability around target weight, lower variability between cycles, and a more consistent operation."

Another advantage is the reduction of manual adjustments and microstops caused by parameter mismanagement. "In a sector with high operator turnover, many problems stem from incorrect machine handling, excessive vibration or poorly tuned recipes. By standardizing operation and self-correcting deviations, the line performs consistently regardless of the operator."

All of this translates into global efficiency gains: fewer stops, smoother production, better use of actual working time, and significant savings from reduced waste, overweight, and downtime.

AI applied to horticultural packing
Based in Spain, Azcaval specializes in weighing and packing solutions for the fruit and vegetable sector, with a clear focus on automation, precision, and industrial efficiency. Integrating artificial intelligence into its systems strengthens the company's commitment to a more robust, standardized industry capable of handling highly variable products.

"It's no longer a concept: Azcaval AI System is live in Europe, Africa, and South America, delivering positive results from day one. This is not an idea, it's an implemented solution already creating value for our clients," the company confirms.

Azcaval will showcase the system at Fruit Logistica, Hall 4.1, Stand D-33, where the team will meet clients, partners, and industry professionals interested in first-hand demonstrations of the technology.
