Moroccan seasonal workers joins Spain’s Huelva as strawberry harvest starts

The first wave of 420 seasonal Moroccan workers arrived in Spain's Huelva region last week to kick off the strawberry and red fruit harvest for the current agricultural season. The arrivals fall under the GECCO programme, which recruits workers directly from their countries of origin.

Local authorities said a total of 21,496 workers from eight nationalities are expected to take part in this season's harvest, 4,500 more than last year, including 17,241 returning workers and 4,255 newcomers.

In the coming days, another 660 Moroccan workers are due to join the campaign, reinforcing Morocco's position as the largest labour source, with a total of 3,305 workers. The workforce also includes recruits from Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mauritania, Paraguay and Senegal, with the last three taking part for the first time under a pilot project.
