New light optimization project launches

Projoules has started a new research project focused on optimizing light use and reducing plant stress in greenhouse cultivation.

As a company that works closely with growers and crop data, Projoules sees a clear need for better integrated insight into how light, coatings, and climate jointly influence crop health and energy use. The research therefore focuses not only on measuring current conditions, but also on developing model-based insights that help anticipate future crop responses.

Together with Wageningen University & Research and cucumber grower Astengrow, Projoules is carrying out this study in a commercial greenhouse setting.

The project examines how different light conditions and coating strategies affect plant development and energy demand in a commercial greenhouse environment. Although growers work with natural light and coatings on a daily basis, the combined impact of these factors on plant responses is still not fully understood. By bringing scientific research and practical experience together, the project aims to create knowledge that helps growers make more confident decisions during the season.

All field measurements will take place at Astengrow in Asten. The results will support the development of mathematical models that provide growers with practical guidance on coating performance, light distribution, and the limits crops can handle at different times of the year.

The project also receives support from Ignition Computing, Gewascoöperatie Komkommer U.A., and Wireless Value. It runs until the end of 2027, and updates will be shared regularly as new insights become available.
