Cambodia seeks to reduce reliance on imports, boost local vegetable production

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is strengthening efforts to boost local vegetable production and reduce dependence on foreign imports. Hean Vanhan, Secretary of State at MAFF chaired a planning meeting Tuesday focused on identifying the types and quantities of vegetables needed nationwide and assessing the year-round availability of domestic supply, a statement issued by the MAFF on Wednesday said.

During the meeting, Vanhan emphasised the importance of promoting high-quality and safe Khmer vegetable production in line with Cambodian Good Agricultural Practices (CAM-GAP) and Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) standards. These measures aim to enhance the competitiveness of local produce while safeguarding the health and well-being of consumers.

CAM-GAP, a regulatory framework developed by MAFF and aligned with ASEAN GAP standards, is designed to ensure safer and higher-quality fruit and vegetable production across Cambodia.

The Secretary of State outlined several key strategies to support farmers, including strengthening vegetable seed research stations, improving irrigation systems, and providing training in advanced farming techniques. The ministry also plans to encourage the formation of modern farming communities and supply contracts to ensure stable prices and reliable markets.
