A new greenhouse complex for year-round tomato production has been completed in the agro-village of Olshany, Stolin District, Belarus. The facility spans 4.2 hectares and is part of a regional initiative to boost domestic vegetable production, particularly tomatoes and cucumbers.
The greenhouse, operated by the local farm OlshanyAgro, is designed to support continuous cultivation, including during the off-season. Plans are underway to install supplemental lighting systems to extend growing periods and increase yields. Expanding production with artificial lighting will require additional energy capacity.
Local farmers have shown strong interest in adopting these technologies to enhance their production capabilities. Heating is expected to rely on locally produced wood pellets, providing an energy-efficient alternative for winter cultivation.
In addition to the Olshany facility, Berestye Greenhouse Complex in the region has also expanded its off-season tomato production. Four hectares of greenhouses have been retrofitted with supplemental lighting under the "Agribusiness" program for import substitution. Between November and March, the Berestye complex expects to harvest around 1,240 tonnes of tomatoes.
