The November CNA Inputs Bulletin highlights a major shift in the profile of fertilizer suppliers to Brazil. For the first time, China has overtaken Russia and become the country's largest seller of these inputs, shipping 9.76 million tons between January and October 2025.
The main fertilizers exported were ammonium sulfate (SAM) and NP based formulations that use nitrogen and phosphorus. Russia sent 9.72 million tons to Brazil in the same period and remains a strategic supplier, the bulletin notes.
However, the rapid surge in fertilizer imports from China within such a short window created long queues of vessels at the Port of Paranagua throughout the year, with average waiting times close to 60 days before unloading.
"This backlog created a significant logistical bottleneck, putting pressure on the port's operating capacity and increasing costs and demurrage, which is the fee charged when a container, vessel or cargo remains longer than permitted in a port, terminal or depot," the bulletin explains.
According to the publication, the exchange ratio between agricultural crops and phosphated fertilizer sources remains unfavorable.
On the other hand, fertilizer deliveries in Brazil through August rose 9 percent this year, and the country could reach a new record in 2025, with the state of Rio Grande do Sul influencing the result due to delayed regional purchases.
