Precision groundwork lays the foundation for Sunrise Greenhouses’ latest expansion

The newest construction phase at Sunrise Greenhouses presented a series of complex site-preparation demands that required both speed and accuracy to keep a tightly coordinated project on track. George de Groot Laser Grading & Excavating, subcontracting to Prins Greenhouses, was responsible for the demolition, excavation, grading, and installation of the interior fabric flooring system. According to owner George de Groot, the project showcased how modern grading technology and experienced crews are reshaping greenhouse construction standards.

Managing a complicated start
Before any grading work could begin, the existing structure on the site had to be completely removed. George explains that the team then needed to rebuild the site profile from the ground up. "After demolition, we had to level the entire area, and that required a substantial amount of extra soil," he says. "We hauled it in from another project where we had too much. With such a tight schedule, our entire team was present to make sure Prins Greenhouses could start on time."

The careful coordination with Prins Greenhouses was central to the project's success. "Communication is key. Plans change, drawings get adjusted, and schedules need to adapt. At Sunrise, we held weekly meetings with Prins to stay aligned and solve any issues quickly."

Laser Grading's role in greenhouse performance
Accurate floor elevations are essential for greenhouse growers using flood floors, bench systems, or precision irrigation. George emphasizes that laser-guided grading directly influences both plant health and structural performance. "Making sure the greenhouse floor is perfectly level really pays off," he explains. "Water drains the way it should, so you don't get puddles or wet spots that cause uneven growth or root diseases. In this project, the floor had to be 100% level for the growing benches that were installed afterward."

A cleaner, longer-lasting floor with fabric systems
The installation of a high-quality interior fabric floor was another key component. Fabric systems have gained traction in greenhouse construction for their low-maintenance and weed-preventing properties. "A good quality fabric prevents weed growth and keeps the floor clean." His team welded each section of fabric within the houses and secured the edges meticulously. "We connected the fabric to the concrete paths and gables with aluminum strips so there's no space for weeds to come through."

Navigating common grading challenges
Asked about common excavation issues in greenhouse builds, he points to unrealistic timelines and inexperience on the ground. "I sometimes see timelines that are too tight," he says. "A realistic plan with some buffer for unexpected delays is important. It's also crucial to have experienced people doing the grading and excavating, because every project brings challenges that need quick solutions. We're involved from start to finish for exactly that reason."

Technology pushing the industry forward
While laser systems have long been part of greenhouse construction, George's team has expanded its technological toolbox in recent years. "We're working with the latest laser technology and, since this year, advanced GPS systems," he says. "They work really well for outdoor cultivation floors and water basins. Our specialized level blades come from the Netherlands."

These tools allow the team to meet increasingly stringent tolerances and provide consistent results even on large-scale or multi-phase greenhouse sites.

A long-term partnership built on trust
For George, the Sunrise project stands out not only for its technical requirements but also for the long-standing relationship behind it. "Sunrise Greenhouses is a long-time customer," he says. "We've prepared multiple outdoor cultivation floors, installed a water basin, and now this indoor cultivation floor. I'm proud that a leading company like Sunrise trusts me to install a new phase every time. That's our ultimate goal: to build long-lasting relationships with happy customers."
