Ukraine has opened its first high-tech greenhouse designed for vegetable and Japanese melon production, integrating Japanese cultivation systems into a national research facility. The launch took place on 14 November at the Ukrainian Institute for Plant Variety Examination.
The project is part of the UNIDO Green Recovery Programme for Ukraine (2024–2028) and is supported by the Government of Japan. The greenhouse was developed by the Ukrainian Agrarian Consulting Center (UACC) together with the Institute's specialists and Japanese engineers from Mebiol Inc. Construction was carried out with the participation of the Ukrainian greenhouse builder "Teplіchok."
The facility will demonstrate Japanese resource-efficient growing technologies, including membrane-based systems for specialty melon and vegetable production. An online presentation of the technologies is planned to take place directly from the new greenhouse.
According to industry association UkrSadProm, which coordinated the Ukrainian side of the project, this is the first jointly implemented agricultural initiative between Ukraine and Japan under UNIDO. The association is preparing to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mebiol Inc. and is already involved in a second joint project with Japanese partners.
The initiative aims to introduce advanced climate-resilient and energy-efficient methods into Ukraine's greenhouse sector as the country accelerates modernization during wartime conditions.
