GrowOrganiX and Biological Youngplants also offer alternatives for small-scale growers

Organic propagation of Surinamese vegetables secured, talks underway for celeriac

Just a day after Plantenkwekerij Jongerius suddenly announced it would shut down, GrowOrganiX and Biological Youngplants jumped into action to offer alternative propagation options for growers. A few weeks have passed since then, and while many growers have found solutions, there is still plenty of uncertainty.

"Because so much remains unclear about what exactly is happening with Plantenkwekerij Jongerius, we notice growers are becoming increasingly nervous," the teams at GrowOrganiX and Biological Youngplants explain. For that reason, Wim van Marrewijk of Biological Youngplants and Lodewijk Stolk of GrowOrganiX are sharing the latest update.

"For organic fruit-vegetable growers working in covered production, the timing truly could not have been worse. Still, every grower who contacted GrowOrganiX BV has now been scheduled, and all orders will be delivered according to plan."

Celery root (celeriac)
In the middle of next week, week 48, a meeting will be held in central Netherlands for all organic celeriac growers who are interested. "We will discuss a market-wide solution with them, based on collective decision-making and shared responsibility. The situation with Jongerius really shows how important integrated cooperation along the chain is, especially if we want long-term security in plant material."

Surinamese vegetables
Since last Friday, growers also have certainty regarding the 2026 propagation of all Surinamese vegetable crops that were previously raised and supplied by Jongerius. Biological Youngplants BV and the seed supplier have reached an agreement to ensure continuity.

Alternatives for small growers
"In response to the many questions reaching us through different channels, including Bioplant, we want to stress once again that GrowOrganiX BV is ready to supply cold-greenhouse growers and outdoor growers with the organic fruit-vegetable seedlings they will need for the coming season," Wim and Lodewijk say. "This also applies to allotment associations, CSA groups and smaller growers. GrowOrganiX BV will propagate grouped batches of fruit-vegetable plants for them, which will then be distributed together with other crops via Biological Youngplants."
