In 2023/2024, prices for Almería's greenhouse peppers reached a record high

In the 2023/2024 season, the prices paid to growers for Almería's greenhouse peppers hit a record high. According to data from the Price and Market Observatory consulted by Hortoinfo, the increase was 15.43% compared to the previous year. This rise is due to lower production, expanded cultivated area, and, most importantly, higher prices at the source.

In the 2024/2025 season, the Almeria greenhouses produced 911.8 million kilos of peppers, a 0.37% decrease from the previous season's 915.2 million kilos.

The area dedicated to this crop reached 12,682 hectares in 2024/2025, a 1.32% increase from the 12,517 hectares in the previous season.

The average price also increased. Producers went from earning € 1.06/kg in 2023/2024 to € 1.23/kg in 2024/2025 (+16.03%).

California pepper was once again the dominant variety, accounting for 72% of the total. It was followed by Lamuyo (16%), sweet conical and Italian peppers (5% each), and smaller shares of snack (1%) and hot peppers (1%).

Germany remained the primary export destination with a 38% share, followed by the United Kingdom (13%), the Netherlands (12%), France (10%), Poland (6%), and Italy (4%). The remaining 17% was destined for other countries.

Spanish consumption rebounded modestly in 2024, reaching 4.30 kg per person. This marks a shift after several years of decline: 5.69 kg in 2020, 5.05 kg in 2021, and 4.09 kg in 2023.
