Kwek Global Pte Ltd started importing Ethiopian Strawberries last year. "Ethiopian Strawberries are a premium product that tastes sweet and has with good shelf life. We are getting 12 to 15 berries per 250 punnet," said Hong Chew Kwek, Managing Director at the company.
The season for Ethiopian strawberries starts in late September and lasts till May the following year.
"We are importing about 10 to 15 pallets to Singapore every week by air for the Singapore supermarkets and food services. Due to the excellent quality and great taste, we have been able to introduce Ethiopian strawberries into the Hong Kong market this season. Feedback from the Hong Kong wholesale is positive and encouraging. Hong Kong supermarkets have endorsed the quality and listed them in retail. As a result, we are now sending 5 to 10 pallets to Hong Kong every week."

"At the moment, Ethiopian strawberries are finding a good niche market and a window of opportunity, as there is limited competition. Currently, there is a very limited supply of Australian strawberries, and the shelf life is short due to a high level of maturity. Egyptian strawberries are rumoured to be starting soon, but we do not touch the early strawberries as the quality is suspect and the price is high.
"We have good faith and trust in the quality of the Ethiopian strawberries and believe that they will be able to command a presence and loyalty among the retailers and food services customers."
