All available organic propagation capacity is being used right now after Dutch Plantkwekerij Jongerius unexpectedly announced it will shut down. Other plant propagators are stepping in to help — not only from the Netherlands, but also from abroad. The German company Natterer has offered both space and support.
Natterer is based in Vaihingen, just northwest of Stuttgart. Several German growers have already contacted them for help. These growers used to buy their organic young plants from Dutch nurseries but suddenly found themselves without supply. "They can't get their plants anymore because other propagators are already fully booked," explains Pieter Schapers, a Dutch employee at Natterer. So far, no growers from the Netherlands or Belgium have reached out to the German nursery.

Natterer produces nearly the full range of cold- and warm-grown crops on 8 hectares of production area. "For warm crops, we're fully booked for the first seven weeks of 2026," says Pieter. "But from week 8 to week 14, we still have room. For cold crops, we grow almost everything — from lamb's lettuce, brassicas, and lettuce varieties to herbs and medicinal plants. Like Jongerius, we use trays and press pots ranging from 3 to 10 centimeters, and we can take on special crops upon request."
This isn't the first time Natterer has stepped up after a Dutch nursery closure. "We did the same when Plantise stopped operations," Pieter recalls.
